The Weeting Curriculum

We teach the National Curriculum through Learning Challenges, which are built around a questioning and enquiry led approach to learning. This allows us to plan teaching sequences that promote children’s natural curiosity about the world around them and hook them into learning, and to provide appropriate challenge and differentiation to meet the needs and interests of all our children. Visits and visitors form an important contribution to this way of learning.

The outcomes of the Learning Challenges are driving up standards through the reinforcement of basic skills by weaving them through the curriculum alongside subject specific skills. Literacy and numeracy are more meaningfully taught in context and help children to develop a broader understanding of the world around them, and demonstrate progress in their skills base. Underpinning the curriculum are the skills taught to children that show them how to be good learners, thereby empowering them to be successful learners.

The Learning Challenge Curriculum has proved to be a more interesting approach for both teachers and children. Teachers have the freedom to plan activities that enthuse their teaching to engage children’s interest. Children are more motivated to come to school and learn, and they tell us they find this way of learning far more enjoyable, interesting and exciting.

Phonics is taught across reception, year 1,2 and 3 using Letters and Sounds.

We use the files on the tab to the right (Overview of Curriculum by Year Group) to plan our Long Term Curriculum for children as they pass through each year group.

Staff will then plan how to combine the expectations of each subject throughout the year, and cover them through the Learning Challenges the classes work on.
