Welcome to Ash Class
Spring Term 2019
This term in Ash Class we have a big focus on chocolate, which is proving rather popular, not surprisingly! As well as our class reader being ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl, the children have been looking into the enquiry question ‘Can you grow chocolate?’ and we have a chocolate ‘tree’ in our classroom. We have been finding out about where chocolate comes from and how it is produced.
Linked into this, we are studying the Mayans. We started by finding Central America on the world map and looking for the countries of Central America in our atlases. The children then worked together to produce a list of research questions about the Mayans which they hope to find answers to over the next few weeks. They have approached the History and Geography work with a great deal of enthusiasm and are keen to work on their challenge for this term – to make a model of a Mayan temple!
In English, we are continuing our Talk for Writing work by looking at writing creative stories, based on ‘Elf Road’. We have nearly finished learning the text and the children are looking at all the features which make it such a good story so that they can apply these ideas to their own work. As well as this, we will be looking at describing characters, based on ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. The children are also working hard on comprehension, spellings and grammar each week.
Within Science, we have been looking at flowering plants in detail, finding out about the various parts of the plant and their function. We have grown some seeds and explored the necessary requirements to make sure they grow well, such as light, warmth, water and soil. We are also going to find out about different habitats and look in detail at rainforests. We will also look at the life cycle of the cocoa tree and how chocolate is made.
In P.E the class have had lots of fun exploring the large gymnastic equipment and using music to be super creative with their sequences.
In Maths the class continue to work hard on learning their times tables and all about money....so they will know how to count their change when they are in the local shop buying some sweets or chocolate with their pocket money!!
In Art we have explored mixing our own colours and studied the painting called “A tiger in the storm” by Rousseau. We are busy making our own rainforest scene!
We are definitely looking forward to a lovely 'chocolate filled' Easter!!

This term we are travelling back to World War 1, as we look to answer the learning challenge question-World war 1-was it a great war? We will look at marking the 100 years since WW1 ended with thoughts of remembrance. Finding out about the trenches will be important to understand what life was like for those fighting in the war. Our class reader "A soldier's Friend" will through fiction, look at the significant role that animals played in the war.
Our main writing focus will be understanding fiction in particular some books written by Roald Dahl and developing our comprehension skills, as well as aspects of poetry. We will also have daily guided reading and lessons in spelling, handwriting and grammar.
Our science topics will be animals, classification and food chains. This will include looking at nutrition and healthy eating. We will also find out about teeth and making sure we take care of them!
